Abstract | Cognitive mechanisms are notably composed of rational and intuitive processes. Intuition is regarded as an individual, non-linear and non-rational thinking phenomenon mainly beneficial in uncertain situations with time bound processes. Majority of the radical product development teams are supposed to make decisions in uncertain situations hence intuition is generally recommended as an effective mode of decision making during these product development projects. Despite a plethora of research on expert intuition and team decision making, the underlying process of how expert intuition is ultimately accepted as an intuition based team decision is still an under researched phenomenon especially in context of radical new product development (NPD) projects. This study qualitatively explores the underlying process through which an individual intuition is generated and ultimately accepted as a team decision in radical NPD context. The process is explored by 1) identifying the antecedents of expert intuition in radical NPD teams and 2) by examining the individual team interaction of expert intuition and team decision making. Five in depth case analysis are conducted of NPD projects operating under high uncertainty. Interviews and archival data collection techniques are used. Results reveal that data and task-specific factors not only induce a team member to intuit but also induce other team members to accept that intuition. These inducements moderated by other individual and team characteristics lead to intuition based team decision making. Academic and managerial implications along with study limitations are also discussed. |
