Abstract | According to “Study on National Electric Master Plan 6 of Vietnam for the period 2006- 2015 and the outlook to 2025” conducted by Institute of Energy in 2005, by a direct request of the Prime Minister, the electric demand will increase more than 10% per year to meet the economic development, demographic growth as well as other demand. Moreover, the fossil fuel especially coal for electric generation and other consumption will be exhausted by 2050. Therefore, in parallel with using efficient and conservative energy, the Government has decided to develop renewable energy and introduce nuclear power as an important strategy to control and mitigate the greenhouse gas emission. To implement this strategy, Vietnam is considering building the first nuclear power plant. However, the introduction of nuclear power is currently facing several challenges and having several pros and cons. The reason is that nuclear power plants which are unlike other types of power plants concern with safety reasons in operation and maintenance, keeping radioactive waste as well and high investment cost. Thus, the author will investigate challenges facing nuclear power introduction in Vietnam and provide some approaches for solutions. |
