AbstractWireless body area network (BANs) have attracted a lot of attention as a future technology of wireless networks for medical applications and health services. Wireless BANs can be generally divided into two types of groups, i.e. on-body BANs and in-body BANs. In on-body area network, wireless signals are transmitted along the human body while, for in-body area network, signals are transmitted through the human body tissues. However, the propagation characteristics and performance requirements of these two networks are quite different from each other. An approach to solve this problem is dual-mode communication system to optimize the network for both in-body and on-body channels. Two types of transceivers are employed in this dual-mode system. One is on-body transceiver placed on the human body surface and the other is in-body transceiver placed inside the human body. This study evaluates the bit error rate performance of the Dual-mode IR-UWB communication system for different modulation techniques (i.e. BPSK, QPSK and PPM) via matlab simulation and compares the simulation result. Finally, a link budget analysis is performed to investigate the feasibility of this IR-UWB communication system
