Abstract | Farmers in land reform areas are commonly allocated small size of agriculture land, and in most of the cases they are poor and lack sufficient agricultural knowledge. Therefore, Agricultural Land Reform Office performs several research projects to improve welfare of smallholder farmers. Promotion of contract farming (CF) can be one of the alternatives to improve farmer’s living standard, income and effective land utility. Since CF is a solution for market problems such as credit, insurance, and information and promotes improvement of rural development by serving new cropping technologies and information. Therefore, this research aimed to study the factors of CF that effect farmers’ income in Bo Phloi District and Lao Khwan District, Kanchanaburi Province. The study also analysed the factors influencing CF participation among contract farmers in both Districts of Kanchanaburi Province. A total of 100 contracted farmers were interviewed to find out the differences with respect to cost and return, farm management practice, ability to access to the marketing, technology and cooperation, and factors influencing participation in CF. The results would help better understand growers’ attitude on asparagus production under CF. This study would also provide strong direction and further policy development for Agricultural Land Reform Office. The results revealed that farmers from both Bo Phloi and Lao Khwan Districts had almost similar income. There was a slight difference in cost and return of asparagus production due to the cost variation of farming inputs such as fertilizer, plant growth regulator and insecticide. The incomes from asparagus calculated by household yearly income were 115,864.30 and 112,813.70 THB for Bo Phloi and Loa Khwan, respectively. Farmers in both Districts showed positive attitude on the provision of CF. Farmers mentioned that CF provided a support of technology, cooperation, marketing, economic and fairness. Overall, all indicators of all six aspects were presented at very high and high levels of influencing degree. These results indicate the potential for developing CF in land reform area since it can generate numerous benefits to farmers. Moreover, the factors that influenced farmer’s decision and participation on CF were technology, economic and marketing. Overall, the social aspect showed no influence on farmer’s decision to participate in CF. |
