Abstract | Managing employees’ performance and trying to improve it should be a major concern for companies since it has a direct impact on its success or failure. This should be even more important for multinational companies who are operating in several countries and have to be both globally and locally competitive. When implementing a performance management system, they might face some cultural issues at the subsidiary level. This research studies the impact of Thai national culture on the perception of performance management processes. It has been based on literature review and on the case study of a German firm operating in Bangkok, in order to gather qualitative data and to obtain a deep understanding of Thai culture’s specificities and their consequences on how performance should be assessed and managed. The interviews conducted at the subsidiary level highlighted the impact of national culture on performance management process. The findings of these interviews included the fact that the process should not be entirely centralized from the parent company and that it should be adapted to Thai culture by taking into account the collective dimension of Thai society and the importance of the relationships between colleagues. |
