AbstractMicrowave Parr reactor was used to optimize the organosolv pretreatment process of Typha and optimized conditions were further evaluated with conventional pressure Parr reactor. Two different organosolv pretreatments including ethanol organosolv and formic acid pre-treatment were evaluated and optimized based on pulp yield and klason lignin content with microwave Parr reactor for the conversion of Typha capensis. Optimized conditions were further evaluated with pressure Paar reactor and enzymatic hydrolysis was conducted to identify the bioconversion of pretreated biomass. Organosolv pretreatment of formic acid with hydrogen peroxide catalyst effectively delignify the lignocellulosic biomass and 90% formic acid and 6% hydrogen peroxide yielded minimum klason lignin content of 2.8 %( biomass basis). Estimated highest cellulose-glucose yield was 87.5% (dry basis of the pulp) and it was also observed with the same condition. Isolated lignin with each organosolv pretreatment was chemically characterized by 13C NMR spectroscopy, FT-IR spectroscopy and size exclusion chromatography. It was identified that the lignin isolated by ethanol organosolv pretreatment either with dilute sulfuric acid or sodium hydroxide has pure lignin structure while formic acid pretreated samples were still having sugar impurities.
