Abstract | A Hard Disk Drive (HDD) consists of many components such as, magnetic recording head, magnetic recording disk, motor base, ramp, voice coil magnetic, top cover, and screw. In the HDD manufacturing process, any HDD that fails to meet assembly criteria, visual inspection criteria or quality tests will be moved to teardown process to separate each component and reuse for cost saving purposes. Screw is one of the HDD components that used the most. After the teardown process, these screws will be inspected before reusing with other HDDs if they still meet the inspection criteria. The screw sorting machine is equipment for screw inspection using an optical microscope to inspect the screw threads (side view) and the screw head and screw recess (top view) with high speed unit per hour. The current problem of the screw sorting machine is over rejection rate and escaped defect screws. Top view inspection at the screw recess is the major failure mode. Therefore, the recess inspection needs to be improved for more accuracy. This thesis is focusing on improving the accuracy and proper control of the screw sorting machine by adjusting the machine’s visual inspection parameters. Design of Experiment (DOE) is used to achieve the best parameter setting and then applied to the screw sorting machine. The setting accuracy is proved by capturing screw recess images and analyzed by image processing software. |
