Abstract | The application of the Observational Method and Instrumentation at the Blue Line Extension Project was investigated. Due to uncertainties in the ground, the Observational Method is used to compare and verify the actual ground behavior with the design assumptions and predicted ground movements. Reaching the predicted values do not necessarily mean automatic stoppage of work but instead, the designers use a set of course of actions for each exceedance of the trigger values. In this project, the exceeded trigger values required an increase in monitoring frequency. Due to the decrease and stabilization of the lateral wall movements, no changes in the construction was done. Instead, the trigger values were revised. Furthermore, the wall deflection Shmax /H % ranged from 0.05-1.19% and reached a maximum wall movement of 58mm, while the Svmax/H ranged from 0.012-0.167% and reached a maximum surface settlement of 14mm. The volume loss computed was 1-1.3%. On the other hand, the instrumentation and monitoring at the MRT Blue Line Extension Project were found to be more extensive than other similar geotechnical projects. However, upon evaluation, the frequency of monitoring did not fall within the range as prescribed by the AIT/AITES Guidelines. |
