AbstractDistribution network is an importance part of electrical power system, it carries the electrical power from transmission to the consumers. However, it has the largest share of the power loss in the power systems. The use of DG sources is most economical solution to solve the power loss problem and improve network voltage profile since its modular in structure and cheaper to build. However, if incorrect placement, DG sources may lead to some serious constrains in the system such as operation and protection problem. In this thesis, a novel optimization algorithm called Salp swarm algorithm was performed to find out the best capacity and location of DG to minimize power loss in radial distribution system. Moreover, SSA also used to figure out the optimum time-dial and pickup setting of relay to minimize the total operating time of relay. Direct load flow and SSA has been programing in Matlab software. Minimize power loss is the first objective and it has been performed in IEEE 33- bus and IEEE 69-bus redial distribution system. Minimize total operation time of relay is the second objective and it has been performed in 8-bus test system, 9-bus test system, 15 bus test system and IEEE 33-bus radial distribution system. The third objective is to restore protection coordination from impact of DGs by modified relay characteristic curve and it has been performed in IEEE 33-bus system. The result of minimize power loss as well as minimize operating time of relay has been compared with other well-known algorithms in order to prove its effectiveness in finding the optimal solutions. The results got from SSA shown that its dominance in both of minimize power loss and minimize total operation time of relay with all difference test systems that has been proposed in this thesis. However, the result obtain from modification relay characteristic curve is validated in DIgSILENT software and its shown that after modified relay characteristic curve, relay can work properly with all operating mode of DGs installing in the network.
