Abstract | In 2011, there was a steady growth in energy consumption in Thailand. Natural gas consumption took the biggest share of total consumption. In order to accommodate a steady rise in demand and reduce import dependency, Thai oil and gas company is finding new energy resources in foreign countries. However, oil and gas project through foreign direct investment (FDI) is high risk, high return project. There are many types of risk including its unique geological risk. It requires an effective risk management process. Therefore, this research aims to explore the concerned risk factors and risk management practice in oil and gas project through FDI. Case study technique was used in two foreign oil and gas investment projects in Thailand. Semi-structured interviews and documentation were conducted to collect the data. Theoretical risk frameworks were used during data analysis by comparing them with real practice. Nature of risks and the risk management practice of the company were investigated. Key finding indicated that important risks in the projects relate to government regulation, EIA, company strategy, project design, subsurface information, company support, and project resources. Moreover, the primary risk response strategy for important risk factors and improvement to risk management frameworks were suggested. |
