AbstractOptical fibers are widely used in today’s backbone networks due to their high bandwidth capacity. To reduce the bottleneck problem at the end user, Ethernet Passive Optical Network (EPON) has been developed. Since EPON is widely used, knowing the performance of EPON will result in more effective network planning. Various analytical expressions of the EPON performance in terms of the mean packet delay have been derived. However, there is no accurate analysis for EPON under heterogeneous traffic. In this thesis, we investigate and analyze the performance of EPON under heterogeneous traffic for two dynamic bandwidth allocation algorithms (DBAAs) which are gated service and limited service. We demonstrate through computer simulation that the limit service is necessary for keeping the mean packet delay of a well-behaved user within a given bound. In addition, we derive analytically the maximum scheduling cycle time for the limit service in terms of the delay bound and demonstrate its accuracy with numerical results from computer simulation. Finally, we investigate the effects of large round trip time (RTT) in long-reach EPON to the mean packet delay and demonstrate that the derived maximum cycle time can still be applied.
