Abstract | The purpose of this study is to examine how a Sri Lankan entrepreneur introduced the concept of convenient stores to the country and set up a chain of well established convenient stores in the urban and peri-urban locations of the commercial capital. The introduction of convenient stores to a retail market which was traditionally predominated by super markets and mom and pop shops first took place in 2005 under Go Getter brand, and today, there are 25 branches in and around the capital. This study was predominantly based on a case study approach, specifically examining three stages of the organizational set up, namely the start up phase, the problem solving phase and the growth phase. The document discusses in detail the challenges faced by the entrepreneur at each of these stages and the strategies used by him to overcome such challenges. The strategies adopted by the entrepreneur had to be novel and innovative because of intense competition in Sri Lanka’s retail market. The success of Go Getter has to be attributed to the attention paid to work methods, supply chain management and people management strategies adopted during the first and second stages of company development. Go Getter has demonstrated a culture of change management engaged in continuous strategy development to maintain long term competitiveness. Through the adaptation of the change management process, Go Getter was able to develop a sustainable business operational model. Go Getter as of today is rapidly expanding its business operations and has developed a culture of change management which in turn has resulted in the success of Go Getter convenient stores in the Sri Lanka modern trade industry. |
