AbstractThis research compares single-carrier and multicarrier transmissions for a multiuser multipleinput multiple-output (MIMO) visible light communication (VLC) system. Single-carrier transmissions are based on pulse amplitude modulation (PAM) while multicarrier transmissions are based on orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Comparisons between PAM and OFDM are made to identify when each technique outperforms the other in terms of the bit error rate (BER) versus the transmit optical power. The results from simulation experiments show that PAM performs better at low bit rates while OFDM performs better at high bit rates. To further improve the BER performance, OFDM with bit loading is investigated. In all cases, multi-user signal separation is based on the block diagonalization (BD) precoding method, which is known to require low signal processing complexity and hence a low power consumption at a receiver unit
