AbstractHard disk drive is a data storage device which is required high reliability performance. Today data storage requirement is increasing every year. The HDD capacity is continuously increasing while the size of head and media spacing is decreasing. Contamination is becoming a big problem in HDD manufacturing. This problem causes reliability and performance issues. From HDD failure laboratory analysis, most of the failures are from organic contamination and particulate contamination. Phenol aqueous solution was selected as organics contamination precursor to study on photo degradation properties. Photocatalytic degradation of phenol in water was examined using ZTO (Zinc Stannate) nanoparticles. ZTO nanoparticle was synthesized by hydrothermal process under mild condition with Zinc Acetate and Tin Chloride as precursors. Several tools such as SEM and XRD were used for evaluate particles structure and p[article size. The average particles sized obtained is around 254 nm with Zin to Tin ratio 2:1. Photo degradation of Phenol solution was observed with 12W UV irradiation. Results showed that Phenol solution can be degraded by ZTO nanoparticles around 20% with limited of 12W of UV source.
