Many Authorities have developed policies to enhance Buffer Zone Concept to preserve peri-urban buffer spaces in their surroundings. Therefore, the primary aim of this study is to investigate the current buffer zone management of peri-urban area that is hampering by changing land use. This study examines the last 20 years of land use changes in a Detailed Planned Zone of Chittagong Metropolitan Area where has the existence of peri-urban buffer area along with Core Zone development boundary. Furthermore, the analysis has covered interviews with the major stakeholder to explore the preservation attitude on the peri-urban buffer spaces, as well as to indicate the level of urbanization perspective. Reviewed secondary documents, land use planning and implementation, strategies of buffer zone managements to the justification of the overall validity and credibility of the primary data sets and information that used for analysis by triangulation methods. The responsible authorities have expressed positive attitude on urbanization than the preservation of peri-urban buffer spaces. Due to lack of inter-agency coordination of urban development authority is not able to implement actually and control rapid urban expansion and peri-urbanization growth to protect buffer zone spaces at the regional level that could have increased severe impacts on peripheral Core Zone development at national level. Therefore, the study highlights the need for the efficient practice of buffer zone into planning and management level to preserve peri-urban buffer spaces contained by the urban expansion and peri-urbanization processes. |
