Abstract | Primarily based on an ethnographic field investigation conducted over the matrilinealmatrilocal Garo community of Modhupur sal forest, Bangladesh, this study provides a historical account of local livelihood transformation and it’s impacts on gender and the environment. From a post-structural feminist political ecology perspective the study reveals that within specific time and geographical space, the interactions among structural forces, cultural ideologies and agency of local actors shape the gendered outcomes of livelihood change. The study attempts to represent changing Garo society drawing upon the live experiences of three generations of Garo women and men. Following a mixed methods approach, the study reveals how in the context of centric resource enclosure, Garo individuals and groups uphold their gender specific roles and interests and assume diverse identities in relation to nature. The findings also unfold the formation of cultural and economic class difference among Garo people as consequences of livelihood struggles. Analyzing contemporary Garo livelihoods, the research identifies further readjustments and alterations in indigenous women and men’s livelihood roles and resource rights. Finally, the study examines how material work practices that change over time and geographical space, reconfigure culturally embedded concept of masculinity and femininity and practices of power between conjugal partners. |
