AbstractThis study aims to examine the household gender relations and its impacts on access and use of maternal health care services in Nuwakot, Halde Kalika VDC Nepal. The analysis was based on women, in the reproductive age, 20-49 years who had given birth no further than four years back but not less than two months ago to get more recent and relevant information and also they have had made use of the postnatal care services. Qualitative study primarily had used applied in-depth interviews, focus group discussion and key informants interview to explore socio-economic status, specifically household gender relation and its access and use of maternal health care services. The qualitative study had revealed that the overall use of antenatal care services is high in this VDC. The household gender relations such as women’s mobility showed an effect with women’s access and use of delivery care services. Women from higher household education, extended family and non-indigenous ethnic group showed an effect with the use of maternal health care services. Also, women from the nuclear family had control over the financial resources and are more likely to access health care services. Similarly, mother-in-law played an important role in use of maternal health care services. Besides this women from the indigenous group were affected more or backward compared to the non-indigenous women when it comes to maternal health care service use. Likewise, distance to the health post and lack of awareness about the maternal health care services was the major problem for the women’s access and use of maternal health care services. The findings suggest that since the use of postnatal care services is low in the study area it was difficult to identify the access and use barriers to postnatal care services with respect to household gender relations. Therefore, further study using quantitative method should be carried out to find its impact with all the three household gender relations indicators.
