Abstract | This study was designed to examine the barriers (factors) perceived by Myanmar employees who are working at entry management level in service sector and to compare the perceptions of gender groups. Based on literature reviews, factors were classified into three levels individual, organizational and societal factors. The data from 139 samples were run through descriptive statistics analysis and Independent T-test. The results indicated that among individual factors, willingness (determination) to move up, interest towards work, selfconfidence and self-initiative toward career growth were perceived as most important in contributing to career development, followed by the importance of knowledge and skills. Findings related to organizational factors shows that top rated career barriers were lack of regular performance appraisal and feedback, lack of clear role identification, lack of career development planning and opportunities for moving up within organizations. Societal perceptions on young people and women leaders had mild effects on their career. Women and men differed significantly in perceiving of two organizational factors: lack of accessibility to informal networks and having too high-required criteria for obtaining higher position, and one societal factor: societal perceptions toward female leaders being inferior to male leaders. |
