Abstract | Innovation nowadays has been recognized as a key strategy to gain the competitive advantage and sustainable development of business organizations. Process innovation in particular has shown its decisive role in implementing and achieving the core targets of companies in specific industries. In this research, the author – a Production Engineer of Japan Vietnam Petroleum Company, a joint venture that has been operated in the Oil and Gas Exploration and Production industry in Vietnam for more than twenty years – has tried to study and assess characteristics of process innovation within the company activities and its contribution to core targets of the company. The research has identified types, degrees and importance of innovation activities to the company operations and development; especially emphasize on the key innovation project – Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) Hydrocarbon Injection Full Scale. Through the research, it is recognized that the company has currently possessed quite positive process innovation capabilities, related to the culture, resources and infrastructure. Besides, its small size of the workforce makes the collaboration with external partners become indispensable to deploying important process innovation projects. Based on this, the research suggests the company to develop a specific innovation policy to support all kinds of innovations, especially to enhance bottom up innovation activities. To enhance the process innovation capability especially for the next implementation stage of the EOR Hydrocarbon injection project, it is proposed to review and deploy active and specific plans in training and developing key workforce for each department due to characteristics of innovation which are very different among departments. The research also proposed to strengthen the company policy to restrain key talents whereas building a collaboration policy with external partners to encourage open innovation and better control, and to manage the cost and result of such innovation. The company needs to continuously build a strong process innovation capability to prepare for the next difficult Enhanced Oil Recovery stage. |
