AbstractThe oil and gas industry is one of the largest investment businesses, especially in the exploration and development phases. Therefore, when discovery of an oil field, the oil and gas companies attempt to fast track development project to bring the field into production and the most preferable approach, which the companies normally selected, is EPCI. There was a new project management model for fast tracking EPCI project that Japan Vietnam Petroleum Company (JVPC) has applied for building of production facilities, so called EPCI modified or hybrid EPCI. JVPC demonstrated the advantage of this approach with significant project schedule reduction in management of Rang Dong full field development projects. However, during implementation of the projects, JVPC has more than one time, encountered problems with contractors leading contract disputes, some disputes were solved via long negotiation, some disputes have not yet been resolved even though the project has been finished for over 3 years and several rounds of tough negotiation has been made. The purpose of this research is to find out the root causes of disputes problems and to access the effectiveness of the alternative dispute resolution, which JVPC currently adopts in their business. The findings explained the root cause of dispute with contractor in stage 1 project is lack of interface management; this is a crucial functional management for the success of the hybrid EPCI management model while the root cause of dispute with contractor in stage 2 project is a general project management process, risk management. It also observed that the ADR, which JVPC currently adopts for its business needs further improvement to get more effective.
