Abstract | Training is not only indispensable if not to say vital for every business as a tool for developing human competency. How employees are trained in a company often has a major influence on its operation from productivity, competitiveness to customer satisfaction. Though appearing to be a straightforward concept, training in fact is complex and hard to grasp. That is why for many companies, developing and operating a training system proves to be far more challenging than anticipated. This research takes on a case of a small Vietnamese private company named Luck House Graphics, which provides creative services in graphic design, printing and visual identity creation. The Hanoi-based company has been faced with a grave problem of ineffective training despite its intense efforts of training design and delivery. Ineffective training is practically resulting in deficiency of skills and professional knowledge among staff and eventually their poor performance. It therefore threatens the company’s stability, its customer relationships and position as a quality service provider. The case of Luck House Graphics exemplifies a paradox where training is abundant in contents quantity and delivery frequency but somehow falling short in quality. Following a qualitative approach, the research analyzes the training situation at Luck House Graphics to identify causes leading to training effectiveness. It seeks to explain whether the company fails its goal of growing staff’s competency because of misconceiving training and being overly focused on quantity and scope. The research on one hand projects a complete picture of the training system at Luck House Graphics and on the other enables an insight into its interlinked shortcomings. Based on its fact-findings, the research also recommends practical solutions to improve the company’s training system and address its problem of being ineffective. It concludes that a full training reform with integrated measures is the best choice for Luck House Graphics. Its training system has to be drastically renewed to keep up with increasing work demand and function as it is supposed to. The company however has a good chance of successfully implementing the reform as it is already starting to take remedying actions with initial positive results. |
