Risk management of PVPower Power Plants

AbstractPetroVietnam Power Corporation (PVPower) currently is the biggest independent power producer in Vietnam. The corporation has to operate and maintain its power plants with the highest availability and reliability to meet the power demand for the high grow rate Vietnam economy. In other hand, PVPower as an independent power producer has to optimize its operation and maintenance cost for the sustainable development of the corporation. To meet these requirements, PVPower needs to manage all the risk exposures in the commercial operation of its power plants. Based on the combined cycle power plant technological process, PVPower business model and qualitative method, this company project report explores main risks in commercial operation of PVPower power plants. The main risks include fuel supply risks, technological risks and market risks. The report also describes common methods to manage risks and two approaches to transfer risks including insurance and long term maintenance contracts. Based on the identified risks, the report gives recommendations to manage risks in PVPower power plant commercial operation. Closing the gaps between obligations required in gas sales contracts, power purchase contracts and long term maintenance contracts, insurance contracts and the important of operation and maintenance best practices are highly recommended. Establishing good record system is also important for systematically identify risks.
