AbstractIndia, being second most populated country and soon to be the first in the world is one of the largest greenhouse gas emitting nations. India faces with another issue of mostly relying on fossil fuel imports for energy security. In this study, a suitable site and strain of microalgae were selected for evaluating the microalgal biomass potential using generic methodologies. The chosen site was Rayalaseema Thermal Power Plant (Andhra Pradesh) and Nannochloropsis sp as the selected strain of microalgae as the basis of this study. The study determines the selection process of a locating a suitable site adhering to all the climatic conditions and subsequently determining the selection process for a strain of microalgae species for the conditions in the aforementioned, to assess the Carbon Capture Potential of the system. The annual carbon capture potential of a pilot plant for an area of 150 ?2 with an operational period of 300 days was estimated to be 0.73 tons of ??2 for a microalgae cultivation system utilizing flue gas from a coal fired thermal power plant. The Cost-Benefit Analysis for algae to electricity has shown that this project is not financially viable. This may be due to the fact that the pilot plant considered is only 150 ?2. It may be feasible if algae are cultivated in a larger area and also using algae for other purposes like producing liquid biofuel.
