Abstract Quantification of energy and greenhouse gas emissions is apparently necessary for designing energy saving and greenhouse gas abatement policies. Hybrid input–output modelling has proved its utility as a useful technique for estimating energy and associated CO2 requirements of different components of final demand like household consumption, government consumption, exports, etc. This study employs input-output modelling in combination with household expenditures data to calculate energy and energy-related CO2 requirements resulting from Vietnamese households’ consumption of goods and services. The discrepancies in these figures between urban and rural areas are also analysed. While the strong move away from coal between 2000 and 2007 did cause substantial falls in direct energy and CO2 requirements prior to the increases in these from 2007 to 2012, the figures for indirect components consistently grew throughout the 12-year period. The major difference between urban and rural households lies in per household and per capita energy and CO2 requirements. The figures for urban households were always considerably higher than those for rural ones. Decomposition analysis shows that the largest contributor to energy-related CO2 requirements during 2000-2007 was consumption structure effect, whereas that during 2007-2012 was per capita expenditure effect.
