AbstractThis study aims to determine the direct and indirect energy requirements and related CO2 emissions of the Filipino households from 2000 to 2012. Results show that around 72 % of the Total Primary Energy Supply and energy-related CO2 emission was demanded by households and about 60% was indirect. Electricity was the main energy used by the households while petroleum continued to catch up as demand in transport fuel increased significantly. Also, the results show the wide disparity between the richest households and poorest households in terms of energy use and emissions as the richest class, on average, required 18.5 times as much energy and emitted 10.5 times as much emission than the poorest class in 2012. On regional analysis, households in National Capital Region displayed the highest total energy requirement and related CO2 emissions compared to other regions. Lastly, decomposition analysis shows that the increase number of households during the study period was the main contributor to the increase in the total energy requirement and CO2 emissions while improvement in energy and carbon intensities help in slowing down the increase in total household energy requirements and related CO2 emissions.
