AbstractThis research is devoted lo find a good method to develop an effective expert diagnosing system for the NC-PC milling machine. The domain knowledge is gained from analyzing the machine related technical documents and operating on the machine. The hierarchical function & behavior model is constructed lo abstract the relationships or various functions or the NC-PC milling machine. A tree structure is used lo organize the diagnosing knowledge. The structure or the diagnosing tree is well designed lo make use or the results of the previous judgments in the later diagnosing process. Finally, the EXSYS professional version is selected to build the rule based expert diagnosing prototype system for the NC-PC milling machine. The rules arc organized into groups according to different functions. The firing order of the rule groups is controlled by landmark variables lo implement the designed diagnosing procedures. The prototype expert system has the expertise knowledge lo diagnose the malfunctions or the spindle drive system, each of the 3 recd drive systems. The method proposed in this research work can be used in developing expert diagnosing system l'or any type of NC-PC milling machine.
