AbstractThis research is mainly focused on designing an automated stage of bearing assembly and bearing height check for a hard disk drive. We present the design and modification of some tools, manipulator, fixtures, gripper to combine the two processes into one and than develop a control system. The research can be divided into two parts: the first part is hardware design which includes manipulator design and gripper design, HSA fixture modification, bearing install actuator design and screw feeder design. The second part is image processing using Image Library and Visual C++, Visual BASIC to create application projects for image grab and processing, data transfer between PC to robot. According to the methodology, the work is started at grippers and fixture design. The selection of the robot, sensors and some standard products such as screw feeder and driver are also taken into consideration during this period. After finalizing the assembly process automation design, we made the CAD drawings and made a prototype assembly machine using the gripper, fixtures, robot and machine vision system. This was followed by the software design including control system design and programming. The prototype functionality testing was carried out in the last stage.
