AbstractThis research is to explore the learning situation of the designers in Wuhan, P. R. China, to find out the obstacles to the learning, and to make some useful suggestions to tackle the obstacles and improve the learning situation. Qualitative method is used in this research. After general investigation of the whole profession in Wuhan, three typical design organizations in Wuhan city - one small, one medium, and one large design institutes are selected. Four to six managers and designers of each design specialty - architectural, structural, mechanical, and electrical, in each institute are interviewed. Data collected in the interviews is analyzed with the method of thematic analysis. After survey and analysis, the learning in Chinese design organizations is identified as a traditional one, and no apparent learning organizations exist. The main obstacles to learning, such as immature market system and management's lack of commitment, are identified. And some sound suggestions, such as the government reforming the market system, furthering registry system, and easing designers' flow, managers updating their management notions and committing to found learning organizations, etc., are also derived.
