AbstractThis study focuses on the settlement characteristic of improved ground using cement column by Deep Mixing Method (DMM). Initially, the axis-symmetric analysis of DMM unit cell was performed by Finite Element Method (FEM) to investigate the deformation behavior of composite ground. For unit cell analysis, the numerical results of settlement was compared with the mathematical solutions from Alamgir et al (1996). Eventually, good agreement is found in comparison and which verify the capability of computer program to predict the performance of mathematical model. Secondary, considering the finite permeability of cement column, a modified analysis method is proposed based on the conventional Broms analysis method (1984) for lime column. To verify the effectiveness of Modified-Broms analysis method, FEM analysis results and field measurements of a full scale DMM improved ground (BangnaBangpaong Highway Project) were employed for comparison purpose. The comparison between analysis results and field measurements were discussed. To examine the stability problem, stability analyses were performed by using limit equilibrium method. Using numerical results from parametric studies, a series of design chruts were established. The design cha1ts ru·e capable of determining the required design parameters such as column length and spacing based on the allowable settlement rate of DMM improved ground for typical Bangkok subsoil profile. Finally, the calculation spreadsheet for the analysis of DMM improved ground is prepared by using the proposed Modified-Broms analysis method.
