AbstractThis study aims at proposing an alternative analysis method for settlement calculation of Bearing Unit in Bangkok area. The proposed analysis is based on single pile behavior, which can be subdivided in two portions. For piles with low factor of safety, the load is assumed to be transferred to soft clay layer. Whereas for piles with high factor of safety, the load is assumed to be transferred to deeper ground. One section of the bearing unit along the Highway No. 34 at km 31 was studied, and comparison of settlement calculation from back analysis and field measurement are presented. Based on proposed analysis, a modified configuration of bearing unit at km 31 of Highway No. 34, is providing smooth transition during its 20 years service period. From the results of analysis, settlement of the bearing unit can be predicted well by proposed analysis. The predicted settlement profile of Bearing Unit section agrees well with the measured field data. The modified configuration has longer bearing zone and more piles than the current configuration by 70 % in te1m of total length of piles.
