Abstract | Khon Kaen Airport, Thailand has been developed to be one of the leading airports in the Indo-China Region. The improvement of air-side capacity will cause congestion to the land-side airport transportation. The efficient ground access system is required to provide a good service in order to minimize the land-side problems. This study examines the existing conditions of ground access system of Khon Kaen Airport. The results showed that business is the major group among trip purposes; non-resident of Khon Kaen is the dominating group for using this airport. Private car is the predominant ground transport mode. In other words, two third of the airport passengers used private cars to travel to and from the Airport while one third of them used public transport. Regarding to average travel time commuting between passengers' destinations in the City and Airport, it was known that average travel time of 11-15 minutes is the dominating group of travel time among all passengers who travel to the Airport. Two proposed airport bus routes namely, AB 1: Airport-Khon Kaen University and AB2: Airport-Khon Kaen City are set by basing on questionnaire results (through SPSS software). Moreover, airport bus routes are presented with Geographic Information System Supported. ArcView is based in this study for managing spatial data. Database in GIS comprises with the main location photos, road name, operation bus number, and estimate time in each main location area to the airport. After proposing the airport bus routes, the actual test drives were carried out to verify the reality of these two proposed routes. As to financial appraisal of this study, microbus with twenty-five seats should be operated as an airport bus, which is the most appropriate ground access mode in terms of operation and financial point of views. In order to make bus operation viable, the first year bus fare must be 40 Baht per passenger per trip and subsequently increasing the bus fare of 10 Baht every year for the next 2 years until the optimum fare of 60 Bath, then bus fare remains at 60 Baht/trip/passenger throughout. |
