AbstractTourism plays a very important role in the national economy of many countries. Its role is even important for countries like Vietnam and Thailand which have many interesting products to offer. The purpose of this study is to provide a marketing strategy that Vietnam can do to improve itself so that more tourists would come to the country. General considerations on benefits of tourism first were provided. Here the tourism industry in the world, in Southeast Asia, and in Vietnam was reviewed, with an emphasis on the plan of the Vietnamese government for the year 2000. Then the Saigontourist Holding Company, which is the most important tourism enterprise in Vietnam was introduced. Special attention was paid to the Saigontourist Travel Service (SGTTS) Company, of which all imp01iant activities were considered. This followed by a brief introduction to the activities of Tourism Authority of Thailand, particularly, its Amazing Thailand 1998-1999 project. The activities associated with this project were considered good examples for Saigontourist Travel Service to seriously consider. The applicability of some of the marketing activities for the case of SGTTS was discussed such as market segmentation, product, and especially, the promotion. Finally, recommendations for marketing are extracted based on the above analysis. These are believed to be useful for Vietnam in general and for the company, SGTTS, in specific.
