AbstractThe late coming of the Internet service in Cambod.ia, the small numbers of Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Internet Content Providers (ICPs ), and the weak development of communication networks has led to the high cost of the Internet. Therefore, the Internet is not developed yet. There are small numbers of companies, which are already on-line. These are the ones in the tourism sector, imp01i and export business and some NGOs. There are some risk-takers who buy the Internet service and provide to the public in general. These are the small start-ups, such as Internet cafe. The government has identified the tourist sector as a major contributor to the economic development. Above all, the Ministry of Tourism is very interested in the Internet. They want to promote tourist sector by using Internet. They see Internet as a fast efficient medium. The Ministry plans to be on-line to provide the information to the rest of the world in the second semester of the year 2000. Although the economy has recently shown signs of gradual recovery, in practice, lots of problems exist in the development of the Internet in the Cambodian tourism sector in the tourist centers. These due to the lack of development in the banking system, human resources, management skills and most of the companies in this sector are small and medium size. Based on this study, some problems are identified and recommendations are offered to the tourism companies. These suggestions address first how they can use the Internet to create competitive advantages to better compete in the long-term. Secondly, as far as the government is concerned the recommendations focus more on how they can maximize the use of Internet to promote tourism industry.
