AbstractKnowledge Management, a systematic process of managing the flow of knowledge within an organizational setting by capturing, creating, synthesizing, organizing and disseminating the knowledge to achieve organizational goals, is perhaps the most talked about tool of strategic importance in the present corporate arena: Alongside its near panacea-like image, there is, however, also a substantial amount of skepticism amongst thinkers that this sudden outburst of excitement may just turn into another passing fad unless a unified definition and approach of Knowledge Management is embraced by all. One important and intriguing aspect of Knowledge Management is measurement. It is a highly contentious issue that spontaneously beckons a lot of debate. However, unless organizations find ways to quantify and attribute the benefits of Knowledge Management to the overall organizational effectiveness, Knowledge Management might even face the same destiny that IT hype did almost a decade ago. This is accepted as one of the major impediments to the success of Knowledge Management today. This research paper addresses the issue of measurement. Based on the extensive literature survey, the current theories and practices are comprehensively discussed. An effort to develop a generic framework for determining the Key Performance Indicators for a Knowledge Management solution is presented by basing the context around the generic Knowledge Management Process Map developed by SAP, Germany.
