Abstract | This study addresses on searching for valuable methods and optimum conditions in improving bending stiffness of folding boxboard. The other critical properties, such as plybond strength, surface smoothness, formation, outer ply opacity, air permeance and drainage resistance of the outer ply furnish, should be sufficiently maintained. The bending stiffness of multiply board could be improved through optimization of the proportional share of basis weight between layers, the optimization of mid ply bulk and the elastic modulus of outer plies. This study focuses on the outer ply elastic modulus optimization. The process variables studied were refining amount and intensity, softwoood pulp content in the stock, drying method and addition of highly refined pulp. The result shows that refining amount, softwood pulp content in the outer ply furnish and proportional share of basis weight between plies are critical active control process variables, plate drying is a critical constitutive variable when outstanding bending stiffness, surface smoothness is required. The bending stiffness and outer ply opacity is identified as a most critical property pair of FBB. The result also shows that using plate drying, low refining intensity, optimum proportional share of basis weight in each ply, optimum amount of beating and softwood pulp content in the outer ply furnish are optimum for folding boxboard properties with improved bending stiffness. |
