Abstract | Increasing concern for future fiber supply and potential increase in wood cost have strengthened the pulp and paper industry's interest in alternative pulp fiber sources, i.e., annual plants. Among many of them, Co bang grass (Lepironia Articulata Dumin), stands out as a potential raw material, because of its high crop yield (15-20 t/ha/a) and chemical composition. To assess the papermaking potential of Co bang grass, the study was conducted to examine fiber characteristics, pulpability, bleachability, and physical properties of Co bang grass. The fiber composition of Co bang grass is very special. There are a lot of fines and very long, low coarseness fibers. The fine, low coarseness fibers of Co bang make Co bang paper light scattering high. The very long fibers give Co bang paper excellent strength properties. The grass was easily pulped by using soda process with pulp yield around 30-40 %. The pulp was bleached using elemental chlorine free sequence to brightness more than 85% ISO. In order to compare Co bang paper properties with well known chemical pulps, these pulps were taken from literature. The Co bang was easier to beat compared to other non-wood materials. SR of unbeaten Co bang pulp was already high. The tensile and tear strengths of Co bang were much higher compared to hardwood, many kinds of non-woods such as wheat straw, bagasse, bamboo, and even some softwoods. |
