Abstract | The area under study is predominantly inhabited by Kyaungshae village whose main occupation is agriculture. The study is about how women and men do different things, has access to different resources and benefits and has different responsibilities. To achieve sustainable agriculture development, women who live in rural area, mostly work as agricultural laborers. For example, the men plough and prepare land for cultivation and women engage sowing, transplanting, seedlings, planting and weeding, and harvesting for daily wages. The study was conducted in Letmaungwe Village Tract Peace and Development Council (VTPDC) in Nyaung Shwe Township, Southern Shan State of Myanmar. A total of 36 sample households was surveyed and the research studied the labor participation of women in sustainable agriculture development. It compared on the gender roles and responsibilities in agriculture and household activities by using gender division of labor activity profile before and during a sustainable agriculture project. The survey showed that women's labor participation is more than men's in agriculture and household activities both before and during the project. The survey also found that the women labor participation in the lowest income groups is higher than in wealthy income group. The gender division of labor is constantly being transformed and re-created as social and gender relation change take place. Both past and the on going Sustainable Agriculture project were revealed that women's labor is most imp01iant in field crop production and soil fe1iility management. Women labor burdens are often increased by the introduction of new technologies, new methods and new improved seeds even if these are considered as "Sustainable" types of technologies. |
