AbstractBan Katap and Ban phonesawang, both two studies villages are located in PhouXangHe National Biodiversity Conservation Area. There are many characteristics, which are quite similar to each others. Most of the people in two villages are subsistence farmers and the rice deficiency for several months is major problem of the villagers. Because of the two villages are situated in the abundance of forest resources, therefore when the rice shortage period the alternative way of people are depended on it. Forest resources are also sort of income generation for them. The study showed that woman as the major forest resource users are in a suitable position to be effective managers of the forest resources. Interviews with respondents indicate that because of population increase, there is a decrease in forest resources. forest products and non-timber forest products (NTFP) in protected area, even though logging and exploitation of NTFP for commercial use is now prohibited. Women have been collecting NTFP for years. so they have knowledge in sustainable usage of the resources. However. because the forest was once depleted and also because of demographic changes. women· s traditional knowledge and practice of NTFP use might not be enough. There is a need for a more systematic management of the resources based on the traditional practices of women. In the society as well as PhouXangHe NBCA. women's major constraints are not only lack of availability of time. also illiterate and increased work burden. but also lack of opportunities and supportive interventions. In the existing situation, there is an immediate need for reducing women's work burden through provisions of alternative forest resource use. The organization in each level should understand deeply the role of gender. particularly women· s role in order to enhance them to participate in forest management in every activity including women in the development plan of future action in that area. Government should take an initiation about this. In order to release women from their household tasks. and create time for them to participate in forest management. The government should provide childcare facilities. or can launch a campaign to motivate men to think about sharing the responsibilities in childcare at home and other alternative training that were suitable for them in order to enhance the productivity of forest resources as well.
