Abstract | In line with the Nepal government's policy of supporting private forestry, Churiya Forest Development Project is promoting agroforestry practices in selected areas of Siraha and Saptari districts of eastern Tarai region. Due to the shortage of forest product supply from the forest, Tarai farmers started agroforestry practices to fulfill their demand for tree products even before project intervention. This study has tried to explore the factors influencing the adoption as well as intensification of agroforestry on farmers ' farm. This study is based on primary information gathered with the use of RRA tools and secondary information gathered from different GOs and NGOs. To find internal as well as external influencing factors, socio-economic characteristics of the farmers and contributions of agroforest1y to their household cash earnings and subsistence, have been analyzed through financial analysis. Likewise, to explore the influencing factors responsible for the intensification of agroforestry practice, multiple regression has been employed. Due to variation in existing variables in project supported and non-supp01ted areas, two different models have been developed. The influencing factors identified are land holding size, distance to Churiya forest, amount of firewood consumed, number of active members in the household, net income of the household, upland area and number of days spent on training related to agroforest1y practices. The findings from the analysis reveals that the trend of agroforestry development on private land has increased and even more so in project supported areas, but at the same time a number of institutional and socio-economic factors are influencing its development. Such factors need attention in terms of long-term sustainability of agroforestry practices in Tarai. A strategy has been suggested to minimize such influencing factors for further promotion of agroforestry in Tarai region. |
