Abstract | This study aims to reveal the mechanical characteristics of soft rock subjected to folding action. The dam construction site investigated consists of fine sandstone, which has been sedimented during the Neogene era, and has been subjected to folding action due to the thrust in the transversal horizontal direction. The stratification is horizontal in the right hand side, almost vertical in the left hand side, and diagonal at the central part. Test specimens of soft rock were sampled in a vertical shaft at central point and two horizontal tunnels on both right and left hand sides; boring holes were drilled at the four locations, in vertical, horizontal and diagonal directions for collecting the test samples. ·The specimens prepared were tested in a laboratory to examine the mechanical characteristics of the soft rock: grain size distribution, mineralogy, elastic wave velocity, deformation-failure behaviors and permeability. From the comparative examination of the test results, the anisotropic mechanical properties of sedimentary soft rock is investigated, and effects of the folding action on the mechanical properties is discussed. |
