AbstractOne of the striking features of the second half of this century is the growing awareness of the role of women in economic life. In Burma, women have traditionally had the advantage of doing businesses quite freely and Burmese women entrepreneurs responded appropriately to the market oriented economy when it was opened in 1988. This study examined and analyzed the socio-economic background, business career and management skills of selected women entrepreneurs and determined the constraints and restrictions of women entrepreneurs. For the purpose of the study, (25) women entrepreneurs were selected based on personal recommendations of members of the Myanmar Women Entrepreneurs' Association. Therefore, this study may not reflect the information about Burmese women entrepreneurs as a whole. In this study, it is found that all most all of the selected women entrepreneurs have formal education and most of them are in the (31-40) age group. Most of them are married and learnt that their husbands are said to be supportive of their activities in business. In their business performance, they all have desires to lead themselves and they carry on with husband's support. However, the women entrepreneurs need a strong mentor and mainly rely on their manager or assistant in their business. It is obvious that they are more group-oriented and they use more consultation in important decision making. All of the women entrepreneurs have confidence in their abilities to do business successfully but most of them have lack formal business training and management education. They feel that the required abilities to succeed in business are experience and inborn ability rather than formal training in business management. All women entrepreneurs believe that their business opportunities depend on economic environment of the country. Although this study has weaknesses in sample selection and in sample size, I believe that it will give some general knowledge and information on a lot of issues related to women entrepreneurs, the study of which I hope will continue.
