Abstract | The thesis describes the analysis and design of Internet Subject gateway with valueadded functions in creating and maintaining the system. To create an effective Internet resource accessing system for scholars and academics, the process of resource selection, indexing, abstracting and resource updating are required. This thesis describes design of such a system as well as demonstrates its implementation. The system allows resources to be suggested, the suggested resources to be downloaded, graphics and other tables removed, meta data automatically identified, a summary prepared automatically and presented in a template for indexing and cataloging. The Deep Structure Indexing System based on a faceted precoordinate indexing method is integrated into the model to provide logical search terms by the use of deep structure in order to improve recall and precision. Dublin Core metadata element set is applied with for automatic metadata extraction to collect the information of all web documents with the aim to benefit judgments about the nature and origin of the resources. Automatic text summarization using sentence selection technique based on frequency and clusters of the significant terms occurring in sentences is applied to generate an acceptable abstract for each resource to help in determining the relevancy of retrieved records. For resource updating, link checking is used to check the availability and accessibility of resources. The system generates several indexes from the assigned index terms following the facet analysis method and provides a two-step retrieval for the end user. The end user has to just key in any search term and the system will display all the subject heading in which the term occurs, the display being logical and hierarchical. Upon choosing the specific subject displayed the resources are retrieved and displayed. If the retrieved subjects are too many, additional terms could be applied to the retrieved set and the retrieval made more specific. There will be no need for any relevance judgment after the retrieval as all the retrieved resources are on the topic chosen. Synonym control is also built into the system. The system has management functions such as administrator function, subject specialist, cataloguer function and specific authentication procedures for these. The prototype system is developed with all main value-added functions in Internet environment. User's guides for both information user and information provider are presented. |
