AbstractThis study is conducted to investigate the pozzolanic activity of weathered pulverized fly ash obtained from Mae Moh Lignite Power Plant located in Lampang Province. Conventional fly ash obtained from Mae Moh Power Plant was subjected to accelerated weathering process in order to produce weathered pulverized fly ash and this weathered pulverized fly ash was used to replace cement in mortar. Ground sand was also used to replace cement and functioned as an inert component in mortars. The 50 mm. cube mortar specimens were cast and tested for their compressive strength at 7, 28 and 56 days. In addition, resistance against acidic attack testing was conducted by immersing mortar specimens in 5% sulphuric acid. Subsequently, the resistance against acidic attack in terms of weight loss and strength loss was investigated. The testing results obtained from the experimental program indicated that weathered pulverized fly ash still have some pozzolanic activity and the strength development at the later age can be improved. The number of circles of accelerated weathering process could be an important factor which can affect the amount of the remaining pozzolanic activity in fly ash after weathering process. The more the number of cycles of weathering process is applied, the less the compressive strength. Furthermore, in case of the resistance against acidic attack in terms of loss of weight and loss of strength, it was observed that weathered pulverized fly ash mortar performed considerably better acidic resistance than that of OPC mortar (weight loss and strength loss were decreased) but slightly lower than that of conventional fly ash mortar. Therefore, weathered pulverized fly ash which has been left as a waste material in the disposal area is possible to be used as partial replacement for cement because weathered pulverized fly ash obtained in this study still possesses some degree of pozzolanic activity. In addition, weathered pulverized fly ash mortar possesses better durability than Ordinary Portland cement mortar.
