AbstractThis thesis considers the role that interaction between cable and bridge vibrations can play in the response of cable stayed bridges subjected to dynamic loading. The effect cable dampers have in the attenuation of global bridge response is also studied. An existing cable stayed bridge has been modeled in different ways and subjected to various dynamic computer analyses. The results have been compared between the models. The outcome shows that the appropriate modeling of cables can both reduce and increase the global bridge response, depending on the loading frequency. Cable dampers can reduce the global response of cable stayed bridges significant only under certain circumstances and can not be considered as a means to reduce global bridge vibrations. The consideration of support flexibility for transversally loaded cables can have a significant effect on the results.
