AbstractThis thesis study presents an attempt to develop a knowledge base for selection and processing of films and foils for flexible packaging. A knowledge base system is a computerized model composed of analytical, empirical and heuristic information. This advisory system is an alternative of human expertise that will help in decision making for the selection of films, selection of processing and trouble shooting for each process. A generalized rule based knowledge for selection of materials has been developed especially for snack, food and non-food products. The development of selection of processing steps emphasis on multi-layer films. The knowledge acquisition has been done from experts in the domain, textbooks, technical papers, database, reports, and real situation and processing industry. The acquired knowledge has been organized by tree structure in four modules. This knowledge base system is based on production rules where both declarative and heuristic knowledge have been used. There are approximately 190 rules in the knowledge base and a data driven forward chaining has been used as searching strategy. This expert system prototype has been developed using EXSYS professional version 4.0.1.
