AbstractThis study is concerned with the development of automatic assembly system for ballast industry. The objectives of this study are to design the automatic assembly system for ballast, to analyze the control process, to formulate the PLC program for the system functions, and to simulate this system by interfacing th.rough WinCC. The system can produce ballasts in high quality and quantity in order to reduce the cost of capital and increase the quality standard. This system does not cover all steps of ballast assembly, but it consists of only four main steps following: step 1 - to make W-Shape plate be U-Shape plate, step2 - to take one hundred T-Shape plates in a coil, step3 - to take an insulated strip in a coil, and step4 - to take one hundred W-Shape plates in a coil. This automatic assembly system consists of eleven stations and three tables for ballast assembly. For this study, the programmable logic controller - SIMA TIC S7-300 is used to control the system functions and the .human machine interface visualization - SIMA TIC WinCC software is used to simulate this system. Cycle time for this system, which is the time for assembling one ballast is 5.5 second. On the other hand, the ballasts can be assembled 5236 piece/day (8hours).
