AbstractThis study on the tourism potential in Yala Municipality developed a strategic action plan for sustainable tourism development of the area. The study commenced with the examination of the current tourism development situation and assessed the vision of local officials and community residents regarding tourism development in the community. The study used SWOT analysis to determine the potential for and constraints to sustainable tourism development. Tourism development scenarios were then generated based upon the outcome of the assessment of current tourism situation and SWOT analysis. A cost-benefit evaluation approach based on social, cultural, economic and environmental aspects was applied to assess each development scenario. Senior officials and key development decision-makers in the community were then consulted on the selection of the most suitable scenario. The selected scenario was then used to propose a strategic planning approach for sustainable tourism development for the area. The study recommended that after the establishment of tourism development board, tourism marketing research and detailed cost-benefit evaluation of the development was necessary before proceeding with any tourism development. The recommended approach is an essential step in helping to ensure sustainable tourism planning and development for the area.
