Abstract | The Laotian study was carried out to determine the Solid Waste Management (SWM) method for town of Luangprabang. The data were collected by field observation, site visits and interviews of the authorities involved in the solid waste management. Data compilation was basically done to determine the physical composition of municipal solid waste (MSW), such as markets, hotels, restaurants, industries and hospital wastes, also waste generated by visitors· and tourists. The study shall provide better estimation of waste generation and serves the basis for further planning and management. With the poor knowledge and coordination of people and visitors, limited financial investment resources and low technology for solid waste management in this city, there is a need to introduce an appropriate policy, administrative renovation to improve environmental education for the employees and inhabitants, and spread the basics of waste management to people using public information means and promote people's participation in the solid waste management processes. The study indicates that, the major sources of waste generation in a small tourist city are from markets, hotels, restaurants, industries and hospital waste. Activities for waste recovery, re-use and recycling for minimization of waste to final disposal has to be enhanced. The main fraction of MSW, bio-waste should be treated by backyard composting or central composting at the landfill site. The collection system has to be improved accordingly. Building of public information and awareness on environmental problems is considerable to educate people, change their attitude and behavior regarding solid waste disposal habits. |
