Abstract | Water management in sanitary landfills in tropical countries has been examined through a case study of Phitsanulok sanitary landfill. The water balance in the sanitary landfill was computed and assessment done by application of a computer based Hydrologic Evaluation of Landfill Performance (HELP) model. The model has been applied to an operational landfill. Basic understanding of the water management in a sanitary landfill in tropical countries in terms of design and the effect of various parameters on the components of water balance have been studied. Leachate stream generated in the landfill and its response on the rainfall variations has showed that leachate treatment systems need to be based on the quantity produced. The landfill design should be based upon the characteristics of the solid waste to be disposed off and hydraulic properties of cover soil as well as barrier soil liner in particular. The generation of leachate is not much changed with the addition of layers of waste but the hydraulic properties of the layer materials have significant impact on the volume of leachate produced. The model can only simulate on a yearly basis thus modeling on a short term basis is not significant in this study. So impact of large variations in rainfall pattern in short intervals like daily or monthly do not show response on the leachate generation. However a good estimation on a long-term basis has been found. The HELP model is a good tool for planning and design of sanitary landfills. iii |
