AbstractForests provide climatic, social and environmental services and environmentalism is sometimes equated with the conservation of forest for its significance. Against this backdrop the study was conducted on the status of forest in India, and found that there was a general trend of deforestation is still continuing on account of among others, ease of access, income, population growth and literacy. Forest policy was to some extend responsible for it, but the government has made laudable change in its forest policies and in afforestation programmes and yet the policy still need to be straightened in black and white with some of its contradictory statements. The social forestry was found to have definitely contributed in afforestation, and also found that it is not the magic bullet to solve the forest problems in its present form. The study concludes the loss in forest (deforestation) problem is a complex issue, which needs persistence and consistency of purpose with continued and supportive change towards public participation and management.
